Let’s Explore the Mystery - What is the Big Deal for Purchasing Diamond Wedding Rings!

Several years have gone by since the charismatic Marilyn Monroe stole millions of hearts with the song ‘’Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’’ in the film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. It is true, though; gentlemen prefer blondes, and blondes prefer diamonds. Whether it is the 1940s or the 2000’s, diamonds have continued to influence the human psyche. The question that we often ask ourselves is, ‘’what makes a diamond so special?’’

What Are Diamonds Made of?

For some people, diamonds are just glittering coals. It is true that coals and diamonds are made of the same material, Carbon, but the difference lies in the way their bonds are arranged. Diamonds started forming in the earth’s mantle several thousand years ago. They are not formed everywhere, though. There are specific conditions under which diamonds can form.

Diamonds are held together by strong chemical bonds. These bonds can only develop in extremely high temperatures. That is why they started forming automatically in the earth’s crust, where the amount of heat and pressure is extremely high. This condition can only be manifested in a very deep area inside the crust. Naturally occurring diamonds are formed at least 180-200 kilometers below the earth’s surface, where the temperature and intensity reach unimaginable extremes. Temperatures recorded at these depths have been found to range from 1100-1400 degrees Celsius.

Where Are They Found?

In ancient times, diamonds were extensively found in India. They were mostly used for religious icons and as engraving tools. However, India is no longer a hub for diamond mining. Almost 50% of the diamonds that are sold globally originate from Africa, especially South Africa. Other leading diamond producing countries are Canada, Australia, Brazil, Russia and China.

Synthetic Diamonds

With the advent of science and technology, gemologists don’t need to take the hassle of digging 200 kilometers deep into the earth’s crust in order to mine naturally occurring diamonds. Synthetic diamonds are artificially created in laboratories by using extreme pressure and high temperatures to recreate conditions that occur deep in the earth’s crust. These diamonds are relatively cheaper in price than natural diamonds. However, they are not very different from natural diamonds when it comes to physical appearance, chemical properties and durability. For this reason alone, they have become increasingly popular in recent years.

In conclusion, diamonds are indestructible, precious gemstones with no counterpart. The above-mentioned qualities and properties are enough for us to understand why diamond wedding rings have captured our interests for such a long time.
