There would seem to be an eternal bond between diamonds and emotion or sentiment. Of course, this does not mean that they are only worn for romantic or sentimental reasons, but these timeless gems have come to be associated with those moments in life that are emotionally charged or even supercharged. So, we associate diamonds with engagements, marriages, reconciliations, gifting and similar moments. It should therefore come as no surprise that there is a diamond known as the heart shape cut diamond in recognition of its shape which bears a semblance to the heart.

As romantic as the use of the heart shape cut diamond is, its cut is difficult to accomplish as it requires skill and expert hands. The difficult part is achieving the requisite symmetry for both halves (or lobes) of the diamond. Of course, what really separates both halves is the cleft in the middle and it has to be done such that they are very distinct while the rounded edges that point down towards the tip should have a slightly rounded shape. The beauty of the heart shape and its unique cut allows the diamond to be used in a number of jewelry; solitaire pendants as well as rings.

The classic Heart Shape Cut Diamond has a length-to-width ratio of 1.00 although this figure is approximate. However, there are diverse silhouettes in which the heart shape diamonds are available ranging from narrow to fat. When purchasing a heart shape, the purpose of the diamond as well as the piece of jewelry in which it will be fitted need to be considered since the length-to-width ratio differs for those occasions. The ratio for hearts meant for pendants would be in the region of 1.05 – 1.15 since it has to be a slightly narrow cut while the ratio for hearts meant for a solitaire ring would be in the region of.85 – 1.00. These figures are not rigid, but the stones will likely look better using them as a guide.

A heart shape cut diamond tends to be larger when measured using carat weight. As usual, celebrities have their stories intertwined with this particular gem. For her 40th Birthday gift, Richard Burton gave her a 17th Century heart shaped diamond ring. The stone is said to be traceable back to the Taj Mahal, the name for which it is also known and therefore well storied. Read lovely tips about EGL & GIA Certified Loose Diamonds.
