What You Need to Know About the Marquise Diamond

The Marquise Diamond was created to match original beauty and till today, remains beautiful in representing perfection. Its brilliance and beauty remain timeless.

The beauty of a diamond is difficult for anyone to deny and its brilliance can keep anyone captivated for hours. It is said that each diamond is unique and has a story of its own to tell. In any case, it is quite clear that each diamond has a peculiar signature and there might just be truth in the assertion that as each woman has her own style, there might be some compatibility between both the diamond and the woman. The undeniable fact however, is that there is a strong affinity between the womenfolk and the timeless gems known as diamonds.

The Marquise diamond is one of the most outstanding diamond cuts around. It is in reality, a modification of the brilliant cut diamond. Its shape is sometimes referred to as the "little boat" or 'Navette" due to its similarity in shape to the hull of a little boat. It is indeed lovely and features a flat top otherwise known as the 'table' and sloping slides known as the 'crown'. It also has a tip known as the 'culet'. While its shape has been compared to the hull of small boat, it was in fact named for the Marquise of Pompadour who had a perfectly shaped mouth in resemblance of which King Louis XIV was said to have commissioned a stone to be fashioned. The flat top or crown as it is known is the largest surface area on the diamond and the marquise diamond has the largest surface area on any diamond shape. There is also the tendency for people to view the marquise to be bigger in size but that is just because of its long and narrow shape. Carat weight can be maximized by the marquise cut thus making it seem larger as earlier stated and it also has the tendency to make the wearer's finger seem slimmer and longer.

When you are choosing a marquise diamond, you would need to rely on your own preferences to make a choice. Typically, you are choosing between a narrow or fat diamond. A marquise diamond generally has 58 facets in total; the crown having 33 while the pavilion has 25. The 'bow-tie' effect also occurs in some marquise diamonds and since you will usually not see this on the diamond certificate or dimensions, you need to inspect it visually to confirm.
